First Attempt at Juicing (without a juicer)

Have you ever tried something that you really wanted to like because it was healthy and trendy? *raises hand* This is me on a mission to like juicing. The first fresh-pressed juice I had was at Whole Foods (possibly my favorite grocery store in the whole entire world), and the woman swore I wouldn’t be able to taste the celery. Well, she was very wrong. After trying to choke down the juice, I ended up throwing it away.

One bad experience isn’t enough to keep me away though! I recently purchased “It’s All Good” by Gwyneth Paltrow and knew I had to try her one of her juicing recipes as soon as possible. I decided on the Best Green Juice, because it obviously must be the best. I went to the store and gathered all the necessary ingredients. The only confusion I had was with the fresh ginger. Have you ever seen ginger before? It’s slightly intimidating.

The next morning, I decided to forgo my usual breakfast and try out the juice.

All the ingredients

Best Green Juice

  • 1 apple (cored and chopped)
  • 1 lemon (rind and seeds removed)
  • 5 kale leaves (stems removed and chopped)
  • 1 inch ginger (I used less)
  • 1 sprig mint

Directions: Throw all of the ingredients into a juicer. Enjoy immediately!

I only had one slight problem. I do not have a juicer. Never fear though! The book instructs to add 1/2 cup of water, blend using a food processor, and strain the mixture using a fine-mesh strainer. I had trouble with the strainer part…  I probably should have added a little more water, but after failing to properly strain it, I opted just to dump the concoction into my butterbeer mug.

Green Juice

The texture was definitely off, since I didn’t strain it. But, the taste was very refreshing. It reminded me of minty lemonade. Yum! The next time I make it, I plan on turning it into a smoothie by adding plain nonfat greek yogurt, ice and less lemon. That is unless I get a juicer by then.

  1. Juicing always turned me off…as you said the part of tasting celery etc. But this recipe sounds like something I would like! I’ll have to give it a try!
